KINEXON and AWS Team Up to Challenge the Status Quo in Women's Sports

At KINEXON, we continue to challenge the notion of equal treatment for men and women athletes in both sports science and training preparation. To accelerate change, we are teaming up with AWS to advance our goal: innovate women’s sports with sports data analytics designed specifically for women athletes.

KINEXON and AWS Women's Initiative

2022 brought a change in our approach. As Jana Hubel explained in her blog post, KINEXON stopped treating women’s teams like their male counterparts. We set out to consider specific requirements to develop player tracking and sports data analytics products that allow training programs to be tailored to the needs of women athletes, and consider many factors, including:

  1. Physique
  2. Injury Risk
  3. Player Performance
  4. Menstrual Cycle
  5. Body Measurements

The main objective: empowering women in sports to reach new performance levels through technology.

We listened. We learned – and while we are far from being done, a lot has happened – and we are not in this alone.

Studies show
that there is a disconnect between sports performance training and female athletes. With AWS by our side, we inch closer to our common goal: developing a player tracking and sports analytics products that meet women-specific demands in professional sports. Hence, our Women’s Initiative is a core pillar of the collaboration.

How Does AWS and KINEXON Collaborate on Sports Data?

Sports scientists review the data collected during a female football training session that will be shared with the team's coach.

Together, we will be focusing on needs and requirements of women athletes. Our main objective is not to collect the largest volume of sports data. Instead of quantity, we strive for quality, by focusing on women’s menstrual cycles and personal well-being.

Ultimately, these insights will help us develop tangible, trackable actions and results on and off the pitch as we prioritize individual load management recommendations based on hard and soft factors.

Zoe Baur AWS Global Alliance Lead

AWS is excited to collaborate with KINEXON to make the sports industry better for women through technology and innovation. This is important in helping women reach new levels of their game. KINEXON, powered by AWS, has built a women-specific player analytics solution that equips coaches and athletes with information to help them train better, safer and improve performance.

Zoe Baur, Global Alliance Lead at AWS Sports

Why do we do this? For you! We strive to enable you to innovate the game through live sports data analytics, insights and actions. Furthermore, our goal is to attain nothing less than the leading position in promoting equality in sports technology.

To achieve that, looking at a women athlete’s menstrual cycle is crucial as it leads to hormonal fluctuations, which influence performance. More importantly, incorrect load management can result in menstrual irregularities, a common issue in professional sports.

Hence, training adaptation for women athletes is mandatory, and to facilitate the transition, we already have the first menstrual cycle-tracking dashboards. Joining forces with AWS, we work to accelerate and broaden the research to meet the needs of women athletes, especially regarding their menstrual cycle.

Advantages of KINEXON Player Tracking for Women Athletes

Female athletes are now getting women-specific data that their coaches can use to help with load management, even during the menstrual cycle.

KINEXON sports performance software provides the data, but we also make sure you have the help you need to analyze it and make it work for your team and coaching staff. Here’s how we do it.

1. Player tracking technology as part of professionalization:

  • Providing objective live data and pairing them with soft factors enables teams and coaches to individualize load management recommendations
  • We deliver metrics with women-specific significance and goal-setting features. That combination facilitates flagging women-specific injuries (e.g., ACL tears)

2. Individual sports-science consulting support:

  • We connect you with a personalized partner from our team who will help you set up reports and translate the sports data insights into actions

3. Count on the pioneer:

  • We already have the first versions of cycle-tracking dashboards on hand for you
  • Joining forces with AWS, we accelerate and broaden research
  • We seamlessly integrate new findings into live dashboards

What Will The Future of Sports Technology Look Like?

To receive insights from as many angles as possible, we will target four flagship teams from various sports and geographies to implement KINEXON’s indoor and outdoor solutions. Together with current KINEXON women’s pioneers, those teams will serve as alpha and beta customers for product development.

We’re even hoping to help develop a better return to play protocol for pregnant athletes.

We closed data and knowledge gaps to kick off a test period. In addition, we defined necessary product adjustments and new features such as sharpening thresholds, extending cycle-tracking dashboards and including personalized dashboard elements in the KINEXON Sports App. It is still an ongoing process, but we are more determined than ever with AWS by our side.

If you’re interested in learning more about how our sports performance software can help your women athletes, feel free to contact us at any time.
