Automotive Supplier Continental Implements Fully Automated Material Flow in Partnership With KINEXON Industries
The world’s second largest automotive supplier will work with KINEXON both as a customer and as a development partner.
The technology company Continental is pursuing an ambitious vision in digitizing its production facilities. In KINEXON Industries, Continental has not only found a suitable technology provider but also a strategic development partner for long-term cooperation.
The technology company Continental relies on the IIoT solutions and expertise of KINEXON Industries to digitize its intralogistics. The goal is to fully automate the entire material flow, which is being pursued in partnership with KINEXON Industries. Seven applications are currently undergoing a feasibility study in a model production facility. Further applications — so far visionary concepts — are to be realized in this development partnership
The material flow will not only be automated but also smartly designed. Transparency and documentation are also key success factors, meaning that traceable processes such as internal transportation, warehousing processes, notifications, and much more will be self-managed in the most efficient manner in real time — a concept known as the “smart supply chain”
Intelligent real-time localization based on KINEXON Industries’ UWB sensor technology is one such key technology, which enables all items involved in the production process on the shop floor — e.g., load carriers, materials, tools, machines, transport vehicles, etc. — to be connected and localized with centimeter accuracy in real time. KINEXON goes even further: Its proprietary real-time IoT platform (RIoT) allows data to be evaluated live and processes to be efficiently automated.
Launch with KINEXON at two model facilities — global rollout from 2020
This year’s launch will see seven applications implemented at the Regensburg production facility. The second model facility in Zvolen (Slovakia) will follow in 2020. Depending on the successful implementation at the model facilities, the partners will then seek to introduce the system at further plants. The implementation of RTLS systems and various robotics solutions is also planned at these sites.
“Some solutions digitize, connect, and automate only machines or individual processes. By contrast, KINEXON Industries — being a full stack development company — has the software, hardware, expertise, and project experience to seamlessly and intelligently track and automate Continental’s entire shop floor — across several international production sites. We are especially pleased that we are not merely generating data for Continental but also applying it intelligently and with added value to countless applications based on our own developments in big data, machine learning, AI, and robotics.”
A joint development partnership with high ambitions
Given KINEXON’s diverse range of services and many years of experience in production, (intra-)logistics, and the automotive industry with major clients such as BMW and Audi, Continental has also chosen the company as their development partner. In this development partnership, automations that were previously regarded as visionary are to become smart realities.
“Our digitization strategy encompasses key technologies, planning areas, and numerous processes. It pursues a clear vision: A fully automated supply chain from planning and production control to the physical flow of materials, i.e., from material delivery through production supply to product delivery. As we move into the future with such an ambitious project, we need competent partners who are well-positioned to understand and manage material flow and value-added processes in their entirety, both in terms of solutions as well as development and advice. With KINEXON Industries, we are delighted to have another key partner with the requisite expertise and experience at our side.”
