How KINEXON Is Shaping the Future of UWB: An Interview with Steffen Winkler
UWB is booming — across B2C and B2B applications. As a pioneer in UWB technology, we talked with Steffen Winkler, Head of Product Strategy at KINEXON, about how KINEXON is actively involved in shaping the future of UWB and the technology’s use for location-based automation.
Steffen, we’ve been hearing a lot about UWB lately. Why is UWB such a hot topic for location-based automation?
We have seen a dramatic rise in UWB applications, both in the B2C and the B2B worlds. Apple uses it to help you find your iPhone in the haystack, and Samsung expects UWB to be the “next big thing.” In an industrial setting, UWB has long been the gold standard for ultra-precise indoor tracking. With the X‑Tag, KINEXON recently made the technology available for the Real-Time Location System (RTLS) mass market and large-scale applications. This cost-efficient solution kicks off a price revolution for the entire RTLS market: Now more and more companies can feasibly implement UWB — not only for their asset tracking, but for more far-reaching location-based automation applications.
How is KINEXON involved in helping the widespread industrial adoption of UWB?
As a pioneer in UWB localization, KINEXON has a wealth of expertise when it comes to the technology itself as well as the products deploying it. As a member of the major UWB industry consortia and associations, such as the FiRa Consortium, omlox, and UWB Alliance, KINEXON is working alongside other technology leaders including Apple, AWS, Microsoft, Cisco, or Qorvo, in mapping out the future of UWB technology. Together, we are developing vendor-agnostic standards for UWB to guarantee full interoperability and a flawless user experience. This includes working towards unlocking innovative new use cases for UWB localization as well as creating a wireless multiverse that seamlessly interacts to the benefit of our industry clients. It is exciting to be part of this innovative ecosystem shaping the future of UWB technology and to help unveiling the value of UWB to companies across verticals.
What is the ultimate goal behind your UWB advocacy?
UWB is the most impactful indoor positioning technologies for challenging industrial environments, and we are all about accelerating the use of UWB technology by demonstrating the vast potential it holds for companies. This includes highlighting the many ways it can add value to production processes, warehouse operations, and industrial automation in general. Similarly to the still unexploited benefits of UWB, the potential of localization for automation still remains largely untapped. Ultimately, our product portfolio as well as our work in all public-private UWB working groups aim at optimizing the performance of industrial businesses around the world through leveraging the power of location-based automation and UWB. At the core of everything KINEXON does is our goal to make the most impactful and cost-efficient solutions available to our clients — that includes connected devices to capture location data as well as our powerful software platform to leverage this data for location-based automation.
UWB is an important piece of the overall location technology multiverse. By seamlessly integrating all location technologies, from ultra-precise UWB to BLE and GPS, KINEXON’s location-based automation platform enables industrial companies to fully leverage the power of location data.
